Samantha Mewis waited a lifetime to play in a the World Cup and made the most of it, scoring twice and assisting on two goals in USA's 13-0 win over Thailand.
An alternate on the 2016 Olympic team, Mewis has played 32 games in the 2½ years since, six fewer than former UCLA teammate Abby Dahlkemper, who made her World Cup debut Tuesday as well. Mewis and Dahlkemper, who both play for the North Carolina Courage in the NWSL and became fixtures with the national team at about the same time, have come to lean on one another since their college days.
Mewis and Dahlkemper are two of eight UCLA players or coaches on four Women’s World Cup rosters, a list that includes Ellis, a former Bruin coach, and former player Mallory Pugh, who had a goal and an assist in her World Cup debut Tuesday. “Obviously, playing for the USA, I have that pride. I know what it means to wear the red, white and blue and stand there for the anthem,” Cromwell said. “It definitely feels like a parent moment where I’m just proud.”When FIFA set a target of 1 billion global TV viewers for this Women’s World Cup, that seemed about as likely as Thailand posting a shutout. Turns out there was reason to think big.
