A Utah woman is hospitalized after she reportedly aimed a gun at police officers, who shot and wounded her.
According to Syracuse police, at about 10 p.m. Tuesday a man reported that his “estranged” mother was sending “threatening text messages” and making “suicidal and homicidal comments.” When officers arrived at a home near 1900 West and 2350 South, the 52-year-old woman was in a vehicle in front of the residence, and she was holding a handgun and threatening suicide.
In a news release, police said that officers from several agencies tried to negotiate with her for “several minutes,” but “at some point, she moved the weapon in an aggressive manner and pointed it at the officers.” Officers fired their guns, and the woman was struck by “some of the rounds.” She was taken to a hospital; her condition is unknown.Police did not say how many officers fired their guns, how many rounds they fired, or how many times the woman was struck.
On Tuesday night, Syracuse police initially reported that the woman fired her gun at officers. On Wednesday morning, the department reported that “some details were misrepresented as fact” on Tuesday, “primarily that the woman fired at the officers.”Tuesday’s shooting marked the tenth police shooting in Utah so far this year, according to a database maintained by The Salt Lake Tribune.
