Interstate 25 is closed in both directions at the Mead exit and traffic on Weld County Road 34 is also being diverted at the highway after a truck hauling a backhoe hit the overpass and caused extensive damage, the Colorado Department of Transportation said Monday evening.
“Damage is being seen to by CDOT bridge inspectors now but we expect the closure to be in place for some time. I-25 traffic is being routed to the off and on ramps. Weld County Road 34 which goes over the bridge is closed,” said Jared Fiel, a CDOT spokesman for northeastern Colorado. At around 6:07 p.m., a 2010 Peterbilt semi heading northbound on the highway hit the bridge at mile marker 245 after its load failed to clear. A 2011 Honda SUV was also involved in the ensuing crash, said Trooper Josh Lewis, a public information officer with the Colorado State Patrol.
A Loveland woman, age 32, driving the Honda died in the accident. A juvenile in the vehicle was transported to the hospital as a result of injuries, Lewis said. The driver of the semi was not injured.
