Recent DNA tests helped lead the family to find their daughter and sister had been in Texas all along.
Highsmith’s family announced their reunion Sunday on a Facebook page created by them in 2018 to help renew interest in the case and find her. The page has since been renamed to “Until this month, her case was one of the oldest unsolved kidnapping cases in Texas, the family said. Melissa’s father, Jeffrie Highsmith, recently submitted his DNA to 23andMe, an ancestry database. It found a match to three grandchildren, who are the children of Melanie Brown and her husband John Brown, he wrote on Facebook. A DNA test later determined Melanie Brown is Melissa Highsmith.
“This is not the hardest genealogy puzzle I’ve ever solved,” the amateur genealogist and clinical laboratory scientist Schiele said in the release. “I hope what I do gives other families the confidence to do the same. Never give up.”
