After discovering the benefits of acupuncture firsthand, Kim Ross was stunned to see the lack of accessibility and awareness in the space and decided to fill the gap by opening her own studio. Now, less than two years in, ORA just opened a second location and has big plans for the future.
After sharing her story with her entrepreneurial professor, Ross embarked upon a deep exploration of the acupuncture space and spent the first part of her second year at Harvard connecting with acupuncturists across the country, leading focus groups with perspective clients, and researching the history and tradition of the practice.
A week after opening, though, the Covid-19 pandemic began its vicious spread through New York, and ORA was forced to close its doors. Like others in the wellness space, Ross shifted the company’s focus to digital offerings, with Instagram Live sessions, a blog, and ecommerce, all of which were originally planned for months or even years down the line.
Though the downtown location was presented at the time as a one-off, the ORA founder always had plans for a second outpost, on the Upper East Side. “We were actually planning on it since 2019, before the pandemic, but as we saw New York City and the business really come back to life last year, we knew it was time to move forward,” Ross says. “It was my very first meeting after I had my baby in the spring.
