Top officials at the WHO say that Europe has seen a more than 50% jump in coronavirus cases in the last month, making it the epicenter of the pandemic despite an ample supply of vaccines.
Central and Eastern Europe grappled with spiraling coronavirus cases on Thursday with several countries hitting new daily records in the regions, which have lower vaccination rates than the rest of the continent.
Most Central and Eastern European countries have vaccinated about half of their populations or less, which is lower than the European Union average of some 75 percent. “We are clearly in another wave,” Sweden’s chief epidemiologist, Anders Tegnell, said Thursday. “The increased spread is entirely concentrated in Europe.”
At an online briefing Thursday by the Amsterdam-based European Medicines Agency, experts urged people to get vaccinated.
