Jennifer Lee co-wrote Wish, but she never planned to direct the film.
In honor of Walt Disney Animation Studios' 100th anniversary, the studio behind so many animated classics is releasing Wish in November. The film follows Asha as she learns a dark secret about her kingdom's ruler, Magnifico , who has the power to grant wishes. The new movie was helmed by Fawn Veerasunthorn and Chris Buck, the latter of which is best known for co-directing Frozen and Frozen II alongside Jennifer Lee.
Lee continued,"Also, I think because I knew us very well, having written Frozen and Wreck-It Ralph and Zootopia - that range. So the first idea was that I'd do a first draft. And that was fun for me. I hadn't written since Frozen and to do something new as an artist is important to me. So I thought that's all I was going to get to do. And then we found a way to make it work and Allison [Moore] came on, and did an extraordinary job of really helping us.
"The one thing I did say is just to keep encouraging her that don't be shy with your ideas," Lee shared when asked if she had any advice for the first-time director."And Chris and I, we used to joke, we've never had a fight, and that was true. But what we were able to do, I think, is the minute one of us was not comfortable with an idea, we wouldn't just argue and see who won. We would find a better way that we both could agree on.
