Heavy snows and frigid temperatures continue to plague the West today, and show no signs of stopping — forcing several highways in Northern California and Nevada to close, with travel warnings issued in the snow-lashed Sierra Nevada.
By the numbers:in the low 20s°F broke records in the Seattle and Portland metro areas Monday morning, as even colder air — with wind chills down into the minus-30s and 40s Fahrenheit — began slipping across the border with Canada and into Montana.
"This stretch of wintry weather is able to occur thanks to frigid temperatures, some of which may tie or break record cold highs and lows going through Tuesday." Meanwhile, an unusually stark temperature contrast will set up between the northern Plains, where highs will be in the single digits to teens, and southern states, where temperatures will stay balmy, in the 70s or higher this week.
