The shortest day of the year carries many rituals and traditions
From Hanukkah to Easter, Diwali to Baisakhi and Eid to Vesak there's a plethora of religious festivals and important days celebrated in Lancashire each year.
On this day, which falls on Wednesday, December 21 2022, The gradual decline of daylight hours stops and begins to reverse. It is common practice for people to congregate at ancient monuments around the country, including Newgrange, Stonehenge, Castlerigg Stone Circle and Cahokia Woodhenge as they are aligned with the sunrise or sunset on the winter solstice.
At the exact time the Northern Hemisphere mark winter solstice, the Southern Hemisphere will see their summer solstice. The Northern Hemisphere summer solstice, signalling the longest day of the year, is on June 21.
