Wimbledon is on the hunt for its 1st Chinese champion
Li Na chats to a junior player during the Road to Wimbledon China tournament in Beijing. Li, China’s first major singles champion and one of the country’s most recognizable faces, is working with 24 budding tennis stars as part of her involvement with theFirst staged in China in 2016 by the All England Lawn Tennis Club , the organizers of the annual, in partnership with the Chinese Tennis Association , the junior tournament is open to players aged 14 and younger.
“The benefit to China of a Chinese Wimbledon champion would be inestimable in terms of national profile,” said Gradon, a former director of ferry company P&O. “From our point of view, to have a Chinese tennis champion would be fantastic, in terms of what it would do for Wimbledon.”As part of its drive into the world’s second-most-populous nation, the AELTC announced a five-year deal with OPPO, a Chinese smartphone brand that’s popular with millennials, in April.
With no grass courts to practice on in China when she was growing up, Li vividly remembers her first trip to Wimbledon. The top four from Nanjing will compete at the Road to Wimbledon finals. Held each August on the immaculate lawns of the All England Club, the finals are contested by 120 top junior players. Although most of them are from Britain, 16 finalists will have come through from international Road to Wimbledon events in China, Hong Kong, India and Japan.“One is the pure tennis benefit, of introducing them to grass,” he said.
