The slang term “California sober” has been adopted by one of cannabis’s biggest advocates, Willie Nelson.

The 90-year-old singer is renown for his idiosyncratic guitar styling as well as immortal ballads like “On the Road Again,” but in modern pop culture, he’s almost equally well-known for his advocacy. Days before his 90th birthday, he released a new song alongside trending bluegrass picker Billy Strings called “California Sober,” which celebrates a unique approach to sobriety.
Nelson reportedly gave up drinking alcohol years ago , but cannabis is still in his blood. It’s also become a big part of his livelihood through the Willie’s Reserve line of cannabis products. The term “California sober” refers to a lifestyle that’s devoid of alcohol and stimulants like cocaine, but still includes cannabis and other psychedelics.
