A wildfire that broke out in North Jersey on Wednesday afternoon has spread 140 acres as a section of a state highway in the area remains closed, the New Jersey Forest Fire Service said. The blaze started shortly before 3 p.m., in a wooded area near Charlotteburg Reservoir along Route 23 in West Mildford, officials said.
Crews are working to contain the 140-acre fire, and have begun a backfiring operation, authorities said. It was still zero percent contained, the forest fire service said at 7:25 p.m.Route 23 is closed between Germantown Rd. and Union Valley Road. Echo Lake Road is also closed between Route 23 and Macopin Road, the forest fire service said.
