Wild turkeys males have a coat of 3-6000 feathers colored in mahogany, copper, and green for camouflage in the forest.Abraham Lincoln designated Nov. 26 as Thanksgiving Day at the urging of cookbook editor Sarah Josepha Hale, whose roasted turkey became the iconic symbol for Thanksgiving dinner.
The birds have 3,000 to 6,000 feathers in mahogany, copper and green that camouflage them in forests and fields. The male has a colorful fanlike tail, a tuft of breast feathers called a beard, a prominent dewlap known as a wattle, and a fleshy growth drooping from the beak, called a snood. The birds suffered severe population declines and disappeared from much of their historic range by the early 20th century due overhunting and loss of forests to development.
European explorers in the 16th century were impressed by the wild turkeys in Indian villages, especially the ones culled for cooking. They took loads of turkeys back to Europe, where poultry farmers began domesticating and breeding the birds for their tasty white meat.
