Many of the 60,000 species of orchid grow in distant lands, but more than two dozen species grow in Saskatchewan.
. Both have small flowers in tall, narrow spikes. Northern green bog orchid is widespread and grows in moist depressions, ditches and moist forest. Long-bracted orchid is uncommon and prefers moist woods. — has also been seen at Pike Lake. The bright yellow flowers, up to about an inch long, are slipper-shaped. Insects enter the slipper, become trapped and then pollinate the flowers when they climb out through a special back door.
One species of orchid grows within Saskatoon in the moist woods of the river valley. This small, delicate species, called, is easy to overlook. It grows low to the ground, is leafless and has pale flowers. These plants lack chlorophyll, the green pigment that plants use to create energy from sunlight. Instead of making their own food, they take nutrients from the soil with the help of soil fungi.
