Greater Manchester's new supermarket with 'wild' ice cream flavours and BBQ selling out in an hour
“This is not just a store, it’s much more than that,” says Louise Yip. “It’s carrying on a legacy.” With her husband Andy, she has just opened the Chi Yip Market right in the centre of Altrincham. A pan-Asian supermarket, it has it all - from aisles groaning with ramen to fresh choi sum greens to glossy barbecued duck and sweet char sui pork to vividly colourful ice cream and bubble tea.
But it wasn’t always going to be this way. Andy was a commercial pilot for nearly over a decade, flying all over Europe with FlyBe. When the pandemic hit, he was laid off, and so the plans for carrying on in his father’s footsteps began to form. It’s only been two weeks since they opened the doors, and it’s been bit of a whirlwind for them. Some of the shelves are already bare, because they’ve been unable to keep up with demand.
They shifted 20 whole ducks on the first day, and are generally selling 12 or 15 on a normal weekday. “There is demand for more,” he says. “But I’ll keep it like that for now.” Keep them keen. Smart move.
