BREAKING: Suspect in custody after wild chase, hours-long standoff in Vernon
VERNON, Calif. -- After an hours-long standoff Friday, a man involved in a high-speed chase with Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies that ended at a train yard in Vernon, has been taken into custody.
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department units began pursuing the man, in a reportedly stolen black SUV, just after 2:10 p.m. on the northbound 5 Freeway north of the 605 Freeway in the Downey area. The suspect led the LASD and California Highway Patrol on a wild pursuit from Norwalk and through several other Gateway Cities, at times driving against traffic, before entering the train yard and blowing out at least one tire.
The driver exited the vehicle and ran across several tracks -- at one point attempting to jump onto a moving freight train -- before getting back into the SUV and barricading himself inside.Additional LASD units arrived on the scene and began staging in the area with guns drawn as the man blocked the windshield of the SUV with a sunshade.
