Julian Assange gets 50-week sentence for violating bail
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been sentenced to 50 weeks in jail for breaching bail while awaiting extradition to Sweden on sexual assault accusations in 2012.
Judge Deborah Taylor on Wednesday said it was hard to envisage a more serious example of the offense. A British court will on Thursday consider whether Assange should be extradited to the U.S., where he’s wanted for conspiracy to commit computer intrusion over the online publication of thousands of diplomatic cables.
U.S. prosecutors allege Assange conspired with former U.S. Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning to try to help her crack a password that would have allowed her to break into a U.S. government computer system under a different username. Assange says he’s innocent and his work deserves protection as legitimate journalism in the public interest.Democrats, Trump agree to aim for $2 trillion infrastructure packageWe Want to Hear from You Join the conversation
