Wicked star Cynthia Erivo, who will portray Elphaba, seemingly revealed filming start and script details for Part Two, including the subtitle.
The first script detail for the second Wicked film has been revealed. The popular Broadway musical is being adapted as a movie musical, with the story split across two Wicked films directed by Jon Chu. Wicked: Part One is scheduled to release on November 27, 2024, while Wicked Part Two: For Good is scheduled to release on December 25, 2025. Filming for Wicked: Part One began in 2022 and has continued into 2023.
Elphaba actor Cynthia Erivo shared an Instagram post that provided a first look at the script for Wicked Part Two: For Good, seemingly hinting that the movie musical will begin filming soon. Erivo shared how emotional the experience was and that she hopes that emotion is evident when the film is released.
Why Wicked Is Being Split Into Two Movies According to the musical's original composer and lyricist, Stephen Schwartz, Wicked is split into two parts because without cutting or omitting material, it would be a long movie. Schwartz expressed that there needs to be a break after the iconic "Defying Gravity" song, which occurs directly before the intermission of the Broadway musical.
This idea can particularly benefit the second movie as much of Elphaba's story after leaving Shiz University in the book was cut from the musical, including the time she spends with Nor and other members of Fiyero's family. Novel elements can be incorporated to explore Elphaba's journey after she becomes known as the Wicked Witch of the West. This direction will help the second movie stay engaging after the high point of "Defying Gravity" at the end of Wicked: Part One.
