Volpe is now batting .186 this season with a .605 OPS. He’s hit nine home runs, but struck out 77 times, the most on the Yankees and tied for the 10th most in baseball. He’s swiped 14 bases and hasn’t been caught, but his on base percentage has plummeted to .260, making his speed virtually a nonfactor. Volpe has even been a liability on defense, making seven errors .
Anytime Aaron Boone is asked about Volpe’s struggles — and it happens every couple of days at this point — the manager stresses the positives. The 22-year-old is handling his pursuit of results with, he’s going about his business the right way and he’s been in the middle of some winning moments. Sending Volpe down wouldn’t mean the Yankees are letting go of that confidence, though. The thought of a demotion doesn’t mean that Volpe won’t be a franchise player up the middle in pinstripes for the next decade and beyond. It would be a move designed to give a struggling player a reset. He’d have a chance to work away from the spotlight for a while and rebuild some momentum at the plate before returning to the Bronx.
