While SF's Union Square struggles, Hayes Valley's shopping corridor is thriving for reasons that likely have nothing to do with economics.
By contrast, District 5 Supervisor Dean Preston, whose district includes the Hayes Street shopping corridor, said that “business is booming” in enclaves like Hayes Valley, Haight-Ashbury and Japantown. Even though he’s aware of the bleak headlines about downtown San Francisco, he says that many neighborhoods have actually rebounded.

Sonja Martin Poole, interim associate dean and professor of marketing at the University of San Francisco, told SFGATE that there are many reasons why downtown San Francisco isn’t seeing the same level of success as it used to. “Shopping online means that urban consumers don’t have to encounter the unpleasantries of life in the city,” she added.
