The Giants gave Steven Duggar the green light on the base paths and Maurcio Dubon the bunt sign despite leading by 9 runs. The bucking of convention is part of a concerted strategy.

SAN FRANCISCO — When the Giants raced out to 10 runs in the first two innings Tuesday against the Padres, it gave them a chance to employ their newest tactic sure to cause a stir. The club that tossed convention to the wayside in winning 107 games last season is doing the same to baseball’s unwritten rules this year.

“I fully support both of those decisions,” Kapler said. “Our goal is not exclusively to win one game in a series; it’s to try to win the entire series. … It’s not be disrespectful in any way. I understand that many teams don’t love that strategy. I get why.” “Hosmer was upset,” Dubon said. “He said it was not right. I told him I’m not trying to disrespect anybody. I’m just trying to win a series.”The idea of laying off after claiming a big lead had been simmering in Kapler’s head for at least a few years, he explained. This spring, he and the club discussed the strategy and the possible upsides and downsides.
