🎧 In today's episode of The Journal podcast, siobhanehughes explains what the results of the midterm elections mean for the GOP, which had been expecting to come away with sizable wins

This transcript was prepared by a transcription service. This version may not be in its final form and may be updated.Speaker 2: Republicans were starting to get giddy.Speaker 2: Republicans could feel the momentum building. They could feel voter anger over inflation, and they thought this was going to be a typhoon. It was near euphoria.Speaker 3: We're going to see such a red tsunami on Tuesday.Speaker 7: Full on red tsunami.Speaker 1: But that's not what happened.

Speaker 1: Welcome to the Journal, our show about money, business, and power. I'm Kate Linebaugh. It's Wednesday, November 9th. Coming up on the show, why the red wave didn't happen. So we're talking now at about 10:00 AM on Wednesday morning. What are the results when it comes to Congress? Speaker 1: The President's party often loses seats in Congress in the midterms, and sometimes a lot of seats. How do Republicans gains so far stack up against those previous elections?

Speaker 2: Ron DeSantis won overwhelmingly, and that was a major moment because it indicated that his star was rising. And of course, if Ron DeSantis star is rising, somebody else's star is waning. And that, of course, is the star of Donald Trump. And so it's telling you that Republicans are about ready to move past the Donald Trump era.Speaker 2: Ron DeSantis is perceived as possibly Donald Trump's top rival in the 2024 presidential race.

Speaker 2: The first place you saw it was Virginia, where a couple of Virginia Democrats have wins. Then people started noticing a race in Colorado, where a Trump Republican who was thought to have a safe seat started trailing behind her Democratic challenger. That raised a lot of eyebrows. Really, the capstone was when the Pennsylvania Senate race got called for John Fetterman instead of Mehmet Oz.

Speaker 1: Coming up, what the GOP's lackluster night says about the future of the Republican Party. As we speak, we're waiting on some important races. The Senate races in Georgia, in Arizona and Nevada. How long are we going to have to wait? Speaker 1: Some candidates running for seats were endorsed by Trump and were deniers of the 2020 presidential election results. How did those candidates do in this election?
