Most anniversaries amount to little more than dates ringed in red on the calendar - but it would be a mistake to overlook the 25th anniversary of what we know as the Good Friday Agreement .
The people of Northern Ireland bore the brunt of the violence of course, but today's Millennials and Gen Z-ers would be surprised by the extent to which the gunman and the bomber cast their shadow over daily life across the nation in the 1970s, 80s and 90s.British troops were sent into Northern Ireland to keep the peace in the late 60s. By Bloody Sunday in Derry/Londonderry in 1972, in which British troops shot 26 unarmed civilians, the situation there had degenerated.
The British government responded with what the Home Secretary Roy Jenkins called"draconian measures". The single worst atrocity of the Troubles actually took place in 1998 shortly after the Good Friday Agreement. Dissident republicans opposed to the deal killed 29 people and injured 220 with a car bomb in Omagh, County Tyrone.
Throughout the Troubles, British governments made efforts, often in secret, to negotiate with the IRA. Albert Reynolds, Irish prime minister from 1992 to 1994, and John Major, the British PM from 1990 to 1997, do not get the credit they deserve for carrying relations forward with 1993's Downing Street Declaration.
