The Careers had the perfect opportunity to get rid of Katniss in The Hunger Games. It makes no sense they did not burn down the tree Katniss was in.

The Careers had it out for Katniss in The Hunger Games, yet they did not kill her when they had the perfect opportunity to burn down the tree she was in. Katniss became a big threat to the Careers during the 74th Hunger Games because of her surprisingly high training scores and the Careers, especially Cato, took some joy in being able to get rid of her.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY The Careers refer to the tributes from Districts 1,2, and 4 who were specifically trained to volunteer and win the Hunger Games. They are from the richer Hunger Games districts - those closer to the Capitol - and take pride in being able to win the Games.

Even if the Careers did manage to light the tree on fire, there would have been no containing it after that. As such, a fire would have potentially sabotaged the game, and trying to chop the tree down would have been exhausting for them. They needed to preserve as much strength and energy as possible, so the Careers were clever to try and wait Katniss out.

The Careers' Decision Shows Their Biggest Hunger Games Weakness Although there was some sense in waiting Katniss out, it was only because Cato had failed to shoot Katniss down with Katniss' future bow and arrow beforehand. The decision to stay was therefore one that reflected the arrogance of the Careers tributes, and this was their biggest weakness. The Hunger Games for the Careers were exactly that, a game, whereas the other tributes viewed it as something they just needed to survive.

The Careers always tend to form a group until they are the last ones standing, which gave them a sense of power and superiority. They would never believe that Katniss alone, trapped in a tree, could beat the four of them, and their arrogance allowed them to be beaten. The Careers could never believe Katniss was better than them, but this mindset was essentially their downfall in The Hunger Games.
