Even though The Bourne Legacy received decent box office returns worldwide, The Bourne Legacy 2 never saw the light of day because of these reasons.
The Bourne Legacy expanded the world building of the first three movies in a new direction with its spin-off narrative, but unfortunately, its sequel, The Bourne Legacy 2 never came to fruition. After The Bourne Ultimatum marked the end of the Matt Damon-led series for good, Jeremy Renner took over as the new face of the Bourne franchise in The Bourne Legacy.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Although The Bourne Legacy has a well-rounded story, it ends on a slightly ambiguous note where Jeremy Renner's Aaron Cross skims through a map on a boat and wonders where he should head next. With this ending scene as a cue, Justin Lin jumped on board to direct The Bourne Legacy 2. However, instead of progressing into the storylines set by The Bourne Legacy, the franchise took a U-turn and ended up going back to Matt Damon.
Despite these factors, Universal Pictures initially confirmed its plans of moving further into the spin-off path laid by The Bourne Legacy. However, after Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass showed interest in returning to the franchise, the Bourne series backtracked to where it left off with The Bourne Ultimatum and continued Jason Bourne's story. The Bourne Legacy 2 would have still happened, considering how it was already in the talks after its predecessor's release.
Why The Bourne Legacy 2 Is Unlikely To Happen Like The Bourne Legacy, Matt Damon's Jason Bourne failed to impress critics, but its relatively better box office numbers proved that the Bourne movie series works better with Matt Damon as its lead.
