The Texas backfield belongs to junior Bijan Robinson. But senior backup Roschon Johnson...
Texas running back Roschon Johnson breaks away for a long gain against Kansas State during the second half of an NCAA college football game in Austin, Texas, Friday, Nov. 26, 2021. AUSTIN — For Texas, the 2021 regular-season finale against Kansas State wasn’t about scaling the Big 12 standings or clinching a bowl bid.
The Longhorns’ 22-17 win over a 7-win Kansas State team didn’t nullify their historic six-game losing streak or erase any of the increasingly strange off-field incidents that bedeviled them. But it sure did feel good, particularly for Johnson, a converted quarterback esteemed by both teammates and coaches.
“Yeah, he was amazing,” Thompson said after that win. “I think that just shows his character and his perseverance. I mean, the guy’s a warrior. He’s one of our team leaders and he’s definitely someone that we can stand behind.” “I’ve always felt like I’ve had great respect throughout the whole team,” said Johnson, who converted from quarterback to halfback just a week before his freshman season began. “So, I think that game showcased that to the public more so than the guys. I mean, I’m happy that the last game went that way just so everybody could kind of see what I can bring to the table.”
“We’re both hard workers,” Johnson said. “When it comes to competition in the offseason we do a great job of competing against each other, whether that be in drills or whatever, we just compete in every little way. That’s how we kind of bounce off of each other.” Johnson handled those Robinson-like workloads without much problem. And given his production during the past three seasons, there’s a strong chance he could’ve transferred out to lead the backfield elsewhere.“I just knew what this team needed,” Johnson said. “And just moving forward from last season I felt like the team could only get better, in my opinion. So I feel like me staying was just a reflection of kinda being there for the team and doing what we need to do in order to win here.
