Stranger Things star Gaten Matarazzo wants to see a Legend of Zelda movie and explains why the Nintendo franchise is ripe for a film adaptation.
Stranger Things star Gaten Matarazzo wants to see a film adaptation of The Legend of Zelda. For four seasons of Netflix's hit series, Matarazzo has endeared himself to audiences with his performance as the fan-favorite Dustin Henderson, an integral part of the show's core friend group. Fresh off the success of Stranger Things season 4, Matarazzo has remained busy, proving himself as a more than capable leading man in the romantic coming-of-age comedy Honor Society for Paramount+.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In addition to being a versatile actor, both on the stage and screen, Matarazzo is a well-known gaming enthusiast and lifelong Nintendo fan. The Stranger Things star has primarily been a longtime fan time of the Pokémon anime series, though there is one particular Nintendo franchise he thinks is ripe for a film adaptation.
I’m a huge Legend of Zelda fan and I’ve always wanted to see a very visually and musically driven animated film. It might be challenging when most of the characters never speak, but to explore a vocally silent world where a story can be told visually and through score would be really cool.
Since the live-action 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie was a massive critical and commercial failure, Hollywood has been especially reluctant to adapt other iconic Nintendo games, especially into live-action. The Legend of Zelda has particularly been considered unadaptable since its protagonist, Link, never speaks, in addition to many supporting characters. There have been constant rumors of Netflix developing a live-action Legend of Zelda series with Tom Holland as a popular fancast for Link.
If a Legend of Zelda adaptation ever happens, it should probably stick to animation and be "visually and musically driven," as Matarazzo says, to honor the spirit of the source material. Pixar films, especially WALL-E, have had plenty of success telling stories without dialogue and heavily relying on music and sound effects, so there's no reason an animated Legend of Zelda movie couldn't do the same.
