The Met Office releases a list of storm names ahead of each winter season - Agnes is the first of the 2023-24 season
They can be issued for the whole of the country, or just for specific areas. The latter is more common.There are three tiers of weather warning; yellow, amber and red.
The colour a warning is given depends on a combination of both the impact the weather may have and the likelihood of those impacts occurring. “These impacts can include damage to property, travel delays and cancellations, loss of water supplies, power cuts and, in the most severe cases, bring a danger to life,” the Met Office says.Yellow warnings can be issued for a range of weather situations. Many are issued when it is likely that the weather will cause some low level impacts, including some disruption to travel in a few places.
The Met Office collaborates with Met Éireann and the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute to name storms. They receive thousands of suggestions every year.Chosen names are meant to be “popular names and names that reflect the diversity of Britain, Ireland and the Netherlands”.Here are the storm names for September 2023 until August 2024.
