Carrie was Stephen King's first published novel, but it wasn't the first novel he wrote, and the first one was published years later.

Stephen King has written a long list of novels and short stories that have terrorized generations of readers around the world, but weirdly enough, his first published novel isn’t the first one he wrote.

Carrie was accepted by the publishing house Doubleday, in part thanks to the success of recently released horror novels like Rosemary’s Baby, which led to King’s editor Bill Thompson convincing Doubleday’s executive director to accept Carrie. The Long Walk seems to have been left aside as King continued writing, and once Carrie was published, King continued bringing more and more horror stories, while The Long Walk waited for its big chance.

Why The Long Walk Hasn’t Been Adapted To Other Media Carrie has been adapted into four movies and a stage musical, but The Long Walk has struggled to branch out to other media.
