Tropical Depression 'Imelda' illustrates why category doesn't determine flood risk so saying 'It's just a ____' is dangerous.
It’s happening again in Southeast Texas. A storm that barely has a name is sitting over the region causing life-threatening flooding. My friend Shirley Williams hails from Galveston, Texas and shared compelling pictures of flooding it the family home and near local schools. The remnants of Tropical Storm Imelda have already produced 2 to 3 feet of rainfall and additional amounts are projected through Friday.
I know that people are often tempted to say “It’s just a ” if the storm is not a hurricane. However, recent history with the remnants of Harvey or Florence , Tropical Storm Allison and a devastating “no-name” system that caused flooding in the Baton Rouge region of Louisiana should nullify that logic. The rainfall threat from “lower end” tropical systems is actually something that I have studied for over a decade.looking at contributions of different category storms to rainfall.
These types of storms are significant rain producers. The larger hurricanes aren’t frequent enough to produce most of the actual rain during the season and therefore are not the primary storm type that relieves drought in the region."Parts of Texas were experiencing dry conditions prior to Imelda, but the excessive nature of the flooding is not an acceptable tradeoff. The rain is coming to fast and over a sustained period of tie in a region prone to flooding.
