As of July, Saskatchewan had yet to return to pre\u002Dpandemic surgery numbers — let alone the increase it needs to clear the backlog.
The province has officially issued a call for a third-party contractor to run a dedicated orthopedic surgery facility in Regina, a plan it has hinted at for months as it tries to speed service for the nearly 36,000 Saskatchewan residents who were waiting for surgery as of mid-July.
That’s not because of a shortage of surgeons, but because the government is struggling to recruit operating room nurses, anesthesiologists and other staff who are crucial to operations. Saskatchewan’s government has said third-party providers — who are privately run but paid by the taxpayer — could help complement hospitals.
The plan is controversial among some doctors, who worry spending on third-party providers will divert staff from the public system, deepening the existing staff crisis. Saskatchewan surgery head Dr. Ivar Mendez previously said the government would need to strike a balance on such projects and that the public system should be a priority.
