Humans daydream and fantasize as part of our nature. But why are so many of our fantasies about sex? It may depend on the status of one's current relationship, as well as these factors.
To be sure, people who are not satisfied with their sexual and relational lives are more likely to fantasize about alternative partners than those who are satisfied. These people may use their fantasies to manage sexual or relational distress by creating an alternative “reality” in which, for example, they are in a powerful position or feel sexually desirable.
To ensure that participants had an actual scene in mind, we asked them to describe in detail the specific event. Let’s take a look at a description written by one of the participants that illustrates what such a visualization means:
