Madeline Usher was just as responsible as her brother Roderick for the doomed fates of the six Usher children, but she did offer mercy in a major way.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Summary Madeline Usher never had kids in The Fall of the House of Usher for very clear and even moral reasons. The Fall of the House of Usher is centered on the sinister deal that both Madeline and Roderick Usher made with the devilish Raven character, played expertly by Carla Gugino.
As one of the main The Fall of the House of Usher characters, Madeline Usher, along with her greedy brother Roderick, is primarily responsible for the fate of Roderick's six children, who all die horrific deaths throughout Mike Flanagan's Netflix series. The mythical, shapeshifting, and demonic Raven figure returns to receive her end of the bargain that Madeline and Roderick both agreed to make with very little regard to the lives and legacy of their family name.
Even when the Usher siblings made the deal back in 1979, Madeline mentioned to Roderick that he had more to consider than she did because he had kids and she didn't. Nevertheless, Roderick knowingly condemned all of his children to early deaths, summing it up to a "done deal" with hardly a moment of hesitation. Roderick would later justify his decision by presenting the philosophical choice of living a shorter duration as a king or living longer in a state of depression and pain.
Madeline Keeping Herself From Having Children Turns Roderick Into A Worse Villain This revelation of Madeline's character indicates that she is less sadistic than her brother Roderick, who already had children when he made the deal and went on to have even more. In retrospect, it seems incredibly selfish, cruel, and pointless for Roderick to have kids in the first place knowing the haunted curse of their collective fates.
