Javier Bardem revealed why he felt very insecure on the set of No Country For Old Men. 'The scary part of that scene is not so much my character but the actor [playing opposite Bardem] really recreates fear in an amazing way.'
Oscar-winning actor Javier Bardem may be one of the most acclaimed film stars in the world, but taking on the No Country For Old Men role that won him his Best Actor Oscar actually made him feel insecure. Bardem portrayed deranged killer Anton Chigurh in Joel and Ethan Cohen’s 2007 hit film, which was based on celebrated American novelist Cormac McCarthy’s 2005 novel of the same name.
The Cohen brothers found a niche fanbase early on in their careers, initially gaining recognition for their 1987 comedic-crime caper Raising Arizona. Though the film was by all accounts a box office failure, it did receive a certain degree of critical acclaim. In time, however, the film proved hugely influential on a wide variety of filmmakers, including Edgar Wright and Spike Lee, and today it’s regarded by many as a classic.
“The scary part of that scene is not so much my character but the actor [playing opposite Bardem] really recreates fear in an amazing way. It was a couple of takes – boom, done. I was like, What? Really? After months of preparing this is it? I was so insecure and uh, but, they are the Cohens and they know what they’re doing.”
Watching the scene today, it’s easy to understand not only why No Country For Old Men received the acclaim that it did, but also why Bardem took home the Best Actor Oscar. Whatever degree of insecurity or fear that Bardem had been feeling in the lead up to shooting the scene , he comes across as completely devoted to his character and plays the entire thing with a simplicity and ease that’s utterly engaging.
What’s particularly interesting about Bardem’s revelation regarding his time working on No Country For Old Men is how nerves had him doubting his own very substantial talents. His recollection about the gas station scene is an important reminder to young up and coming actors that even some of the greatest in the game doubt themselves from time to time, but ultimately there’s quality in what might feel like the simplest of moments and performaces. .
