And with medals still to be won in several outdoor endurance events ahead of Sunday’s closing ceremony, the heat isn’t letting up. When planners, coaches and athletes assess the impact of heat on health and competition, they consider a range of weather-related and behavioral factors. Both heat and humidity have played a role in Tokyo. As the weather gets warmer, the body can self-regulate its temperature through evaporative cooling, or sweat.
, or WBGT, to assess overall heat risk during athletic events because it factors in humidity, wind and sunlight in addition to air temperature. A WBGT of 95 degrees Fahrenheit is generally considered the estimated threshold at which sweating becomes ineffective—the limit for human tolerance. When a person is engaged in physical exertion, that threshold drops to wet-bulb globe temperatures of 86-88 degrees.
