seafood restaurant located on Maui’s North Shore. That is because it requires much preplanning: Reservations are taken up to a year out, and it’s booked solid four to six months in advance.
The food and ambiance are supposed to be worth the effort. Mama’s Fish House is known for its fresh fish, caught by local fishers who go out in small boats every day. The fishers have been important at Mama’s from day one — some have been fishing for Mama’s for more than three generations — and their names are even printed on the menu every day to let guests know more about where the fish was caught.
“It exceeded all of their dreams and expectations. They were super proud, super proud,” Christenson says, “and one of their biggest passions was travel, so everywhere that they would travel to, they were always saying, ‘Hey, you know we own this little restaurant on Maui, and nine times out of 10, whoever they were telling this to would say, ‘What? Mama?’ like they’d already heard of it, you know. It was really cute.
“I feel like that word of mouth just exponentially over 50 years is really what led to the popularity, in addition to the entire Mama’s team works exceptionally hard to deliver that quintessential Polynesian experience,” Christenson adds.
