Tonight’s episode opens with a shocking ‘punishment shooting’ — it’s something we don’t often see on a mainstream TV drama

I’ve watched all six episodes, and it’s clear to me that this is no ordinary TV cop show; it is also an insightful look at street-level realities in post-peace process Belfast. The writers, Declan Lawn and Adam Patterson, are Northern Ireland natives and former investigative reporters who worked together on. Their research into the realities of policing such a specific community is lightly worn and laced with gallows humour.

For viewers in mainland UK, it’s perhaps easy to assume that following the peace process, policing in Belfast differs little from London or Manchester. We were disabused of this notion within minutes of the opening episode, as rookie PSNI response officer Grace Ellis checked beneath her car before leaving home. And so much for policing by consent — call-outs in certain areas ended with the officers being pelted with stones and bottles.

There’s plenty of everyday police work going on, and next week’s fourth episode focuses on just one Saturday night as the station is stretched to breaking point.
