This hardly seems like progress, which might explain why the Mavs are already on vacation and Dennis Lindsey may soon be hanging out at AAC.to be “the experienced sounding-board voice” Nico has wanted since last summer, according to veteran NBA reporter and SportsDay alum Marc Stein.
On one hand, hiring Lindsey may be a good basketball move. He’s worked for the Rockets, Spurs and Jazz since playing at Baylor. He acquired Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell, and if that marriage ultimately didn’t take, well, we’re not holding it against him. Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis didn’t see eye-to-eye, either. Maybe both couples just needed stools.
On the other hand, this move doesn’t speak well of Nico, Cuban or Michael Finley, for that matter. I mean, what’s Fin up to?, Cuban said his former star guard would be an “amazing” hire as GM of the Bulls. Yet he apparently isn’t even qualified to let Nico bounce stuff off of him. Probably not as qualified as Lindsey, who’s actually been a GM. Finley hasn’t done it, and, until Nico got the job, he’d never been in charge, either.. Why didn’t Cuban hire Lindsey then? Maybe because it was only four months removed from allegations that he made racist remarks to a Jazz player, Elijah Millsap, back in 2015. Millsap tweeted in February 2021 that Lindsey told him six years earlier if he didn’t shut up, he’d cut his “Black ass” and send him “back to Louisiana.” Lindsey denied it.
Still, Lindsey resigned four months later after a season in which the Jazz posted the NBA’s best record, only to be eliminated in the conference semifinals. The Jazz made the playoffs in the last five of his nine seasons in charge but never reached the conference finals. Nico made it his first season, so at least he’s got Lindsey beat there.
