Director Neil Blomkamp and protagonist Jann Mardenborough take us through it.
was coming to theaters in 2023, one question came to mind immediately: How can there be a movie about a game that features no real story? Indeed, Gran Turismo is simply a piece of auto-racing simulator software—there's no quest for a magical relic nor a city to save from aliens. However, the Gran Turismo film isn't a"video game movie" and isBefore we get to that, here's a quick recap: The first Gran Turismo game arrived on Sony's PlayStation 1 in 1997.
Directed by Neill Blomkamp—of District 9 and Elysium fame—Gran Turismo is based on the true story of Jann Mardenborough, the British driver who won the GT Academy Europe competition in 2011 at 20 years old. After winning, Mardenborough competed in British GT, in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the LMP2 class, Formula 3, GP2, GP3, and in Japan's Super GT series. Mardenborugh and Blomkamp sat down with us to chat about their respective journeys and how they converged when making Gran Turismo.
"This movie came together really quickly," Blomkamp replied."I think right from the beginning I knew that I wanted to use [first-person-view] drones, because I hadn't really seen that in racing films. One of the other things that made me want to direct the film was because all of the kids at GT Academy were trained on [Nissan] R35 GT-Rs, and I've owned three of those over time.
"It wasn't the end of the world, and it was the only crash that we had. I think [Bloom] is actually a pretty good driver. It was just circumstances." Here's hoping footage of the incident becomes public some day, as Blomkamp also described it as hilarious. When it comes to keeping things biographical, Blomkamp was presented with a different challenge.
Building a simulator rig out of wood isn't anything new in the sim-racing world, but it's staggering to think Mardenborough used it to beat 90,000 other competitors and catapult himself to a real racing career. Considering he won the GT Academy 12 years ago now, I wondered if he still has that wooden DIY rig, his original PlayStation 3 console, and the Gran Turismo game disc he used to jumpstart his career."I've never had that question before! Yes, I do," he said.
