The Giants are a mess on offense.
The Giants have been absolutely brutal on offense during their 1-5 start. Not all of that is the fault of play-calling coordinator, of course. Injuries have hit this offense hard — Andrew Thomas, Saquon Barkley, and now Daniel Jones. Even outside of Thomas’ hamstring issue, the line has been a patchwork group.
Remember, Jones essentially got a two-year, $82 million contract. So general manager Joe Schoen — who arrived with Daboll from Buffalo before last season — must figure out by the end of next season whether he wants to stick with Jones or dump him. A huge decision — and one that must play into the current urgency., because of how he acts during games — holding a call sheet, speaking into his headset. That goes all the way back to the epic Week 2 comeback win in Arizona.
Again, what does Daboll have to lose — at this point in a lost season — by taking over play calling? Maybe he can spark something, win two straight winnable home games, and get this team closer to .500, at 3-5. DabollMight he alienate Kafka, who surely took the Giants offensive coordinator job in 2022 because he wanted a chance to call plays? Yes, that’s possible. Yet everything, at this point in a disastrous season, needs to be about getting better production immediately.
As for the Giants’ pathetic offensive numbers, well, you probably know them by now. So shield your eyes if you must. But this is what Daboll and Kafka have overseen amid this 1-5 start, with Kafka calling plays:
