Why ESG matters among wealthy investors paid dbsbank
“In recent years there has been significantly more engagement from institutional investors for integrating ESG in their investment process and the wealth management industry is now following,” said MSCI’s Head of ASEAN Index Sales, Valentin Laiseca, during a presentation on ESG investing at the Hubbis Asian Wealth Management Forum earlier this year.
According to Marc Lansonneur, Head of Singapore Wealth Investment & Treasury at DBS Bank, high ESG-rated companies tend to show higher profitability, higher dividend yield and lower risks and volatility. “This is not all about doing the right thing, it is also about gaining extra value and higher returns,” he says. This emphasis on ESG is even more critical in emerging markets, where governance may not be as robust compared to developed markets.
DBS also launched the ground breaking US$8 million Women’s Livelihood Bond last year, the world’s first social sustainability bond to be listed on a stock exchange. The bond positively impacts the livelihoods of nearly 400,000 women in South-east Asia through microloans. Meanwhile, investors benefitted from a coupon rate of 5.65 per cent.
