Why England's World Cup exit hurts so much more this time ⚽ danielstorey85 via iPaperSport ENG FRA FIFAWorldCup
despite club factors and more; all can be traced back to Eric Dier scoring and a curse being lifted. For many of them, playing for England was as enjoyable as playing for their clubs; that used to be unthinkable.
You cannot invite happiness whilst protecting yourself from sadness. The repeated thought, on Sunday and beyond, is that this was all much easier before. When you suspected that they couldn’t wait to get back to their clubs, it mitigated your emotion. When you believed that the system was broken and so never quite believed at all, a Teflon shell formed. Now there is no protection.
This exit stings more than normal because it was a different type of elimination. This was not gross underperformance against a weaker nation , nor were England held back by a lack of belief despite the opponent or game situation making them favourites . They were not humbled by better-prepared elite opponents , nor beaten on penalties and so crying only misfortune .
during and after the 4-0 defeat to Hungary at Molineux, expectations were low. But England clicked immediately, the manager picked the team the public wanted and England attacked at will. The tournament became a whirlwind romance that blossomed and burned out far too quickly. Inevitably, that produces a nagging pain of what the relationship might have become.
Usually, pain shares a stage with angry recriminations, the desperate apportioning of blame and resentment about what could have been done better. But when the system is overhauled, the players are prepared and the opponent bettered and still you lose, what is there left but the sorrow that it may never happen.
