Disney recently announced new cast members for its live-action Lilo & Stitch adaptation, and the company is facing a lot of backlash from fans.
Disney fans are unhappy with the latest Lilo & Stitch live-action cast member. Disney has seen a lot of success with its live-action adaptations of popular animated films, so it's no surprise Lilo & Stitch is next. Beauty and The Beast saw a lot of success in 2017, becoming the highest-grossing film released on a March weekend in history. Two years later, Will Smith stepped into Robin Williams' genie shoes in the live-action Aladdin film, which sadly was less memorable.

Luckily, this criticism has died down. The film also angered a different group of fans by casting Melissa McCarthy as Ursula. Fans were hoping for a drag queen to play the role since the original character was based on a drag queen.
When young Black girls saw the first The Little Mermaid trailer, they were excited to see themselves represented by a woman who looked like them. The same could have been true for Hawaiian girls and women. However, Disney's choice to go with a light-skinned actress means Pacific Islanders with darker skin won't get to see themselves on the screen the way they did in the animated Lilo & Stitch.
Why Disney's Live-Action Remakes Carry So Much Risk With Casting It's impossible to please everyone. Disney has faced criticism for casting a Black actress in the role of a white princess and now a lighter-skinned actress in the role of a darker-skinned character. While fans have valid criticism and are right to want to see themselves represented in a world where white skin is the norm, the films themselves are often so beloved that even minor issues can stoke anger.
With Aladdin, fans were upset Jasmine was being played by Naomi Scott, an actress who is half Indian and half White. It's difficult to find someone who is a perfect fit for the role while also checking off every expectation fans have. It's also hard to bring the same magic that the original film brought. It's too late to recast Nani, but hopefully, the rest of the Lilo & Stitch cast will make up for the controversy.
