CPS Energy is gamifying conservation to put less of a demand on the grid. Is it working?

, or STEP, the initiative came under fire last year as CPS faced a financial crunch that forced it to seek a rate increase, which was approved this year. The emails and phone calls customers receive about their rankings are a part of the STEP program.

During peak energy times, CPS Energy sends out emails and phone calls to customers, rating them on their energy use compared with that of neighbors in 100 homes of similar size.“It only amounted to a few dollars, but I really liked it,” said Shelia Treviño, a realtor who moved to the Northeast Side of San Antonio from Illinois in April.

“Didn’t cook, and didn’t charge electronics or watch TV,” Treviño said. “I was happy to see that I was No. 9 in my neighborhood. Yay! But wait, no discount? So we sweat for hours for nothing?”A breakdown of key state and local races and candidates in the May 24 primary runoff.Edwards Aquifer’s level predicted to drop to trigger point for Stage 4 water restrictions by August

While CPS Energy does not provide financial savings incentives with its ranking system, Chamberlain said customers will inevitably save money by reducing the demand on the grid during peak times.
