Its the best installment yet.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT A Haunting in Venice is getting much better reviews than the last two installments of Kenneth Branagh's Hercule Poirot franchise, and there is a major reason why. The whodunnit franchise based on Agatha Christie's books returned for a third entry in 2023 as Branagh adapts her novel Hallowe'en Party.
The scarier tone for A Haunting in Venice perfectly fits with the movie's story, which follows Hercule Poirot attempting to solve a murder after attending a séance. The supernatural-infused story is dramatically different from the conventional revenge narratives Branagh's franchise has followed so far. That makes it a risky change considering both of the previous installments were well-received by critics, while audiences much preferred Death on the Nile.
A Haunting In Venice's Reviews Praise The Franchise's Tonal Change The potential risk that comes with A Haunting in Venice's horror tone appears to have paid off in a big way based on early reviews. The positive reviews largely attribute the movie's success to how well Kenneth Branagh pulls off the tonal change. The suspenseful story, gothic atmosphere, and genuine scares are all common points of emphasis for why the movie is worth seeing.
There is no question that A Haunting in Venice is a step in the right direction for the franchise based on the general reviews and the current 77% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Whereas Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile secured barely-Fresh scores of 61% and 62% respectively, the third movie based on Agatha Christie's work has far exceeded those middling scores.
