Gov. DeSantis’s and Sen. Tim Scott’s entry into the 2024 presidential race is a significant turn for the Republican Party. The 2024 race is about who can calm America’s emotions and begin a meaningful and measurable process of unifying our country. The truth is that Trump will never unify America. He is a talented “get results” executive, but not a unifying executive. His name-calling and other antics were entertaining but now are tiresome and demoralizing.
The truth is that President Biden’s pledge to unify America was never attempted. His adherence to the coercive ideology of his party’s radical wing, while insulting nearly 50% of the electorate by equating MAGA with racism, has only inflamed the culture wars. This is the Republican Party’s opportunity to bring most independents and moderate Democrats to the center with a set of common sense, effective, humane and tolerant plans that would begin to treat the self-inflicted wounds of America.
