Western Desert Recce Group (WDRG) is in the final stages of an asset transfer of the barracks from Renfrewshire Council.
A veterans group which is just about to take ownership of Whitehaugh Barracks has this week revealed plans for a £3 million refurbishment of the Renfrewshire site.
Yesterday, the group’s chairman Gary Wallace told the Paisley Daily Express it had signed the missives for the building and would get the keys once the final legal formalities had been completed. There is also a dedicated St Mirren section that will follow every kick of the ball with the Buddies.“We found an old newspaper article from the Renfrewshire Gazette and it provides a detailed description of what the barracks looked like when it opened in 1912.” Detailed surveys have shown both the garage and main building are in a serious state of disrepair. It means the work to restore them to their former glory will be completed in stages as and when funding permits.
However, veterans with building experience and companies supportive of the project have pledged to donate their time and skills to keep costs down.
