Back-to-back bad nights in Chicago.
Guardians rookie right-hander Peyton Battenfield struck out a pair and walked just one, but gave up nine hits including three that left the park. Gavin Sheets smacked his sixth home run and second of the series in the second inning to tie the score at 1-1.
Andrew Vaughn led off the fourth with a solo blast and Yasmani Grandal was aboard for Jake Burger’s two-run shot later in the inning that put Chicago in front by four. But Chicago’s hottest hitter, Luis Robert, did not homer, failing to tie the club record with a home run in his fifth straight game. The White Sox added a pair of runs in the sixth on RBI singles by Anderson and Andrew Benintendi off Cleveland relievers Eli Morgan and Sam Hentges.
Cleveland missed chances to score against Clevinger in the fourth and fifth innings. Will Brennan and Tyler Freeman each singled to open the fourth, but rookie Brayan Rocchio, starting his first big league game at shortstop, swung at the first pitch he saw and grounded into a double play, and Clevinger struck out Mike Zunino to strand Brennan at third.Kwan doubled with one out in the fifth, but Clevinger struck out Rosario and got Bell swinging after hitting Andres Gimenez.
Things looked promising at the outset defensively for Cleveland when Kwan robbed Tim Anderson of extra bases in the first with a diving catch in the gap in left-center field. Kwan covered 90 feet before reaching out to make the grab, which had a 40% catch probability, according to Statcast.: The series concludes Thursday with a 2:10 p.m. first pitch from Guaranteed Rate Field. Left-hander Logan Allen will start for Cleveland while the White Sox send righty Dylan Cease to the mound.
