'Where in the World is Carman Sandiego' looks great—but doesn't play well on Google Earth
She’s baaack! Carmen Sandiego has been on the run for almost 35 years now and no matter how hard we try to catch her, she keeps getting away. It’s happened again. This time Carmen Sandiego’s loose on Google Earth in “The Crown Jewels Caper”.
Since the first Sandiego game released in 1985, Carmen been seen in over 15 video games, four TV series, numerous books, a series of board games, a comic book, a concert series, and a planetarium film. She even showed up in a summer-long event at the Oregon Zoo in Portland in the late 1990s. The lady gets around.
With that kind of itinerary behind her, it’s no surprise to find Carmen Sandiego lurking around Google Earth. The game’s retro-style graphics and Earth’s spectacular 3D views make for a fine combination, especially when playing on smartphones.There is one serious problem with playing Carmen Sandiego on Google Earth, however. Carmen Sandiego’s hook is that it’s an enjoyable way to learn about places all over the world. It’s a premier example of successful edutainment.
Google is advertising two more Carmen Sandiego adventures after “The Crown Jewels Caper”. Let’s hope it finds a way to let you explore and then return to your place in the game before Carmen Sandiego pulls off her next heist.
