Director Jared Bush explains when exactly Encanto takes place and why it’s confusing. Widely popular and critically lauded, Encanto received a number of accolades, including the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. The movie musical also featured the hit “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” which topped Billboard charts and earned its spot as the biggest Disney song of all time. Though no sequel has yet been confirmed, Bush has expressed interest in developing a Disney+ series in the near future.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY During a Twitter Q & A, Bush reveals that though Encanto appears to be set in an earlier time period, the film in reality takes place in the mid-1900s. He clarifies that the Encanto — or enchantment — was sealed at “the turn of the century,” so the setting resembles the beginning of the 1900s.
These developments could happen in a variety of ways. The fissure created in the mountain during Encanto’s climax may mean that the village is no longer as secluded as it once was. More accessible to the outside world, Encanto 2 could see visitors somehow enter into the realm. These new characters could introduce the Madrigals and the townspeople to contemporary society.
The setting in which Encanto takes place is ripe with opportunity. Whether the town will encounter surrounding civilization or whether the time period will even be addressed at all, is merely speculation at the moment. Though all parties appear interested in building a franchise, no plans have yet been solidified.
